The Schachter-Singer two-factor theory posits that emotions arise from two components: physiological arousal and a cognitive label. A key premise is that physiological arousal is often undifferentiated across various emotional states. Therefore, an individual first experiences a general state of physiological arousal and then interprets this arousal within its specific context to apply a cognitive label. This appraisal process determines the specific emotion experienced. For instance, the same physiological response could be labeled as 'fear' or 'joy' depending on the situation, and it is even possible to misattribute arousal to an incorrect emotional experience if the circumstances are misleading.

A core component of the Schachter-Singer theory is the process of cognitive labeling. This process involves interpreting a general state of physiological arousal by considering the surrounding context. The specific label applied to the arousal—such as 'fear' in a dangerous situation or 'joy' in a happy one—determines the particular emotion that is ultimately experienced.

Cognitive Labeling in Schachter-Singer Theory

To test their two-factor theory, Schachter and Singer conducted an experiment where male participants were given injections of epinephrine to induce physiological arousal similar to a fight-or-flight response. The participants were then divided into groups and given different explanations for the arousal: some were correctly informed about the side effects, while others were given no information or misleading information. Subsequently, each participant was placed in a room with a confederate (an actor for the experiment) who behaved in either a euphoric or an angry manner. The experiment aimed to determine if participants who had no explanation for their arousal would attribute their physiological state to the social cues provided by the confederate, thereby experiencing either euphoria or anger.

Schachter and Singer's Epinephrine Experiment

According to the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory, physiological arousal is interpreted within a specific context to produce an emotional experience. For example, encountering a venomous snake in a backyard triggers sympathetic nervous system activation. Given the dangerous context, this physiological arousal is cognitively appraised and labeled as fear, resulting in the emotional experience of fear. If the same physiological arousal were labeled as joy, the resulting emotional experience would be joy.

Example of the Schachter-Singer Two-Factor Theory

Because physiological arousal is very similar across different types of emotions, the cognitive appraisal of the situation is critical to the actual emotion experienced. According to the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory, this similarity makes it possible for individuals to misattribute their physiological arousal to an incorrect emotional experience if the circumstances are right.
