Measuring Desirability: New methods for evaluating desirability in a usability lab setting

Example of Product Reaction Cards

The Microsoft Desirability Toolkit offers several advantages for user experience research. The methodology highly engages participants, encouraging them to openly share negative feedback, and it generally elicits more positive participant reactions than traditional questionnaires. Furthermore, usability practitioners can efficiently collect actionable data in just 5 to 10 minutes, recording it directly into a presentation-ready format for product teams. Finally, team members observing the toolkit exercises gain a more comprehensive understanding of user responses to the product.

Pros of the Microsoft Desirability Toolkit

- These techniques are quick and limited. The methods trade rigor for rich responses.
- They result in qualitative rather than quantitative data, so we cannot look for statistical significance in the results of these tools
- The results cannot be generalized. These techniques are not designed for making broad statements about all potential users of the product.
