Championed by key figures like Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers, this approach posits that people are driven by a desire for self-actualization. It highlights concepts such as free will and self-determination, asserting that individuals actively strive to become the best version of themselves, which has significantly contributed to the psychological understanding of the self.

Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers are two of the most influential figures in humanistic psychology. Their theories and research were pivotal in establishing this perspective's contributions to the understanding of personality development.

Influential Figures in Humanism

Beginning with Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers, the humanistic research program emerged by rejecting the reductionist experimentation typically used in the traditions of the physical and biological sciences, as it failed to account for the “whole” human being. This research approach has been largely qualitative rather than measurement-based. Nevertheless, quantitative research does exist within humanistic psychology, focusing on areas such as happiness, self-concept, meditation, and the outcomes of humanistic psychotherapy.

Humanistic Research Methods

In humanistic psychology, self-actualization is the process by which an individual achieves their full potential. According to Abraham Maslow, this represents the highest-level need in his hierarchy of human needs, a state that people strive to achieve after their more basic physiological and psychological needs have been met.

Self-Actualization in Humanistic Psychology

A central tenet of humanistic psychology, particularly in the theories of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, is the emphasis on free will and self-determination. This perspective asserts that individuals are not merely products of their biology or environment but possess the agency to make their own choices and shape their own destinies, driven by the desire to become the best person they can be.

Emphasis on Free Will and Self-Determination in Humanistic Psychology

A client expresses feelings of dissatisfaction and a lack of personal fulfillment, despite having a successful career. They feel they are not living up to their full potential. From a psychological perspective that emphasizes innate goodness and the drive for personal growth, what would be the most appropriate primary goal for therapy?

Following a prolonged period where behaviorism directed psychological attention primarily toward external actions, early humanistic psychologists redirected focus toward the individual human as a whole. They emphasized understanding people as conscious and self-aware beings.
