Lesions in the Amygdala Affect Fear Responses
-Patient S.M. experienced a rare genetic disorder that caused an accumulation of calcium deposits in the amygdala, which in turn, eventually destroyed the nuclei in both cerebral hemispheres.
-When Patient S.M. was shown movie clips that other people with an intact amygdala found frightening, she reported to feel little or no fear.
-Patient S.M. was unable to recognize facial expressions of fear in other people, but was able to recognize facial expressions for different emotions.

A research study compares brain activity in two groups of participants: one group with a diagnosed anxiety disorder and a control group with no disorder. Both groups are shown a series of images, some of which are emotionally neutral and others designed to elicit a fear response. Based on the known function of a key brain structure in processing fear, which of the following outcomes would be most expected?
