More of Kareem Carrs Scientist communication thread 2

Twitter

Carss discusses four modes of conversation a scientist can have on Twitter: (1) scientist to scientists, (2) member of the public to scientists, (3) scientist to the public, (4) member of the public to the public
The problem is that these “conversations are happening all at once” and “can change from sentence to sentence.”

Analysis of Kareem Carss tweet thread

Dialogue on public online forums such as Twitter can make it difficult to determine the role of speakers, intended audience, and context of a given conversation. Moreover, a speaker within a single conversation can switch between different roles or audiences from sentence to sentence (or perhaps even mid-sentence).

Hypothesis 1 of Kareem Carss tweet thread

Communication in the scientific community would benefit from better signaling of roles (member of the public vs scientist) and intended audience (public vs scientists). It should be clear when the context switches (e.g., speaker changes their role from scientist to member of the public).
