Columbia University

A 2020 survey conducted by the New York Times of over 1,500 American colleges and universities revealed at least 26,000 COVID-19 cases and 64 related deaths since the pandemic began. The surveyed institutions included every four-year public institution and private colleges competing in N.C.A.A. sports. Many of these colleges reported major spikes as dormitories opened and classes resumed, counting over 20,000 additional cases since late July 2020.

2020 New York Times Survey Findings on COVID-19 Cases in American Colleges

Map of cases across college campuses

The New York Times survey of COVID-19 cases in American colleges is considered the most comprehensive available, but it likely undercounts cases due to several reporting limitations:
- Colleges set their own rules for counting cases.
- At least 600 institutions refused to respond to inquiries.
- Some colleges remove tallies after recoveries, stop counting after an initial report, or only report tests administered on campus.
- More than 150 colleges reported zero cases.
