Psychology's emergence as a science is a recent development, with its experimental foundations laid in the 19th century, making it much younger than disciplines like human physiology. Before this period, inquiries into the mind were conducted within the realm of philosophy. The establishment of psychology as a scientific and academic field, separate from philosophy, is largely attributed to the work of 19th-century scholars Wilhelm Wundt and William James.

Edward Titchener (1867-1927), a protege of Wilhelm Wundt, integrated structuralism with psychology. This allowed emphasis on the contents of mental processes instead of their functions.

Structuralism in Psychology

Psychology's history is marked by the emergence of several major theoretical perspectives that have shaped the field. These schools of thought offer different ways of understanding the mind and behavior. Key approaches include:
* structuralism
* functionalism
* psychoanalytic theory
* Gestalt psychology
* behaviorism
* humanism
* evolutionary theory

Theoretical Approaches in Psychology

Wilhelm Wundt and William James are the two 19th-century scholars widely credited with establishing psychology as an academic and scientific discipline, separating it from its philosophical origins.

Founders of Psychology

The early development of psychology was largely driven by Western, White, and male academics. This demographic dominance resulted in a field infused with the inherent biases of this group, partly because these early psychologists were influenced by the prevailing nonscientific societal attitudes of their time. Consequently, this biased foundation had detrimental effects on various groups within society, particularly women and ethnic minorities.

Bias in Early Psychology

While psychology's scientific origins are rooted in Europe and the United States, the discipline rapidly expanded worldwide. Researchers in other regions, such as South America and India, soon began establishing their own laboratories and academic programs, contributing to the field's global development.
