The seven sins of memory is a framework introduced by psychologist Daniel Schacter (2001) that describes seven common ways human memory can fail. Schacter groups these failures into three categories: forgetting (transience, absent-mindedness, blocking), distortion (misattribution, suggestibility, bias), and intrusion (persistence).

Schacter's Framework of Seven Memory Failures

• Transience: decreasing accessibility of memory over time

• Absent-mindedness: lapses of attention that result in forgetting

• Blocking: information is present but temporarily accessible

• Misattribution: memories are attributed to an incorrect source

• Suggestibility: implanted memories about things that never occurred

• Bias: current knowledge/beliefs distort memories

• Persistence: unwanted recollections we cannot forget
