Justification of effort is a social psychology concept suggesting that people place a higher value on goals and achievements that required significant effort to attain. According to this theory, the difficulty of achieving something makes it seem more worthwhile. This occurs because individuals are motivated to believe their time and effort were not wasted, especially when joining a group or completing a challenging task.

Justification of Effort

What does the concept of 'Justification of Effort' suggest about how individuals perceive their accomplishments?

According to the concept of 'Justification of Effort,' how are achievements perceived when they require significant effort?

Which of the following best describes the principle of 'Justification of Effort'?

A military enlistee who voluntarily joins but then faces extreme hardships during boot camp provides a classic example of cognitive dissonance. The conflict between their voluntary commitment and the miserable reality creates intense psychological discomfort. Since leaving is not a legal option, the enlistee cannot resolve the dissonance by changing their behavior. Instead, to alleviate the discomfort, they can alter their beliefs and attitudes. For instance, the enlistee might reframe the experience by telling themselves, 'I am becoming stronger and healthier,' 'I am learning discipline,' or 'What I am doing is important for my country.' By adopting these new cognitions, they can perceive the challenges as valuable, thereby reducing dissonance and feeling better about their situation.

Example of Cognitive Dissonance: Military Boot Camp

A 2006 study by Heckert and colleagues surveyed 463 university undergraduates to explore the link between course effort and evaluation. The findings revealed a positive correlation: courses demanding the most effort were rated as more valuable by students. Additionally, students reported a greater sense of learning from these high-effort courses, a perception that was independent of the final grades they received.

Justification of Effort in Course Evaluations

An everyday illustration of the justification of effort concept is the experience of assembling furniture. For instance, if an individual spends hours putting together a dresser purchased from Ikea, they are likely to value that piece of furniture more highly than a fancier, pre-assembled dresser gifted by someone else. This increased valuation occurs because of the significant personal effort invested in its creation.

Example of Justification of Effort: Assembling Furniture

A classic 1959 experiment by Aronson and Mills demonstrated the justification of effort effect. College students volunteered to join a campus group discussing the psychology of sex and were randomly assigned to one of three initiation conditions: no initiation, an easy initiation, or a difficult initiation. After taking part in an intentionally boring first discussion, the participants rated their liking of the group. The results, as illustrated in the accompanying bar graph, showed that individuals who endured a difficult initiation rated the group significantly more favorably than those who experienced an easy or no initiation.
